Holiday Art Practice 5: Graham McTavish as Dwalin

Description

"You'd never invite Graham McTavish 'cause he would sit there and glare at you, and show his forearms."
- Jed Brophy (Nori) in THE HOBBIT, Production Video #3 in discussing which dwarf he'd invite for dinner. (Later he decided that he would not invite any dwarf at all, which is probably for the best.)

Graham McTavish portrays a dwarf by the name Dwalin in Peter Jackson's upcoming movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit, or, there and back again".

I probably should have been intimidated when I decided that Dwalin would be my next exercise. 8O Not only because of the forearms, but because... well, the gear and the weird hand-thingies (handguards?), and the general muscle look. If a dwarf can be huge, he is. Or looks like that anyway.

Well, I was not intimidated ENOUGH, so I decided of course I'll draw him, he's perfect for both skin texture AND metal!

Turned out that it took me so long to mess around with his face and beard that if I try to finish today, I will end up getting so so so angry that words can't describe how angry I would be, so here you are: Graham McTavish's face with spots of color everywhere. I ended up pretty much just throwing in colors towards the end and stuff will probably happen tomorrow still. That was excellent and so much fun! Imagine what he'd look like if I just painted the skin "smooth" like I did with the previous ones! That just wouldn't be right.

So today was skin (and beard and hair, because Dwalin's facial hair ended up being irresistibly interesting), and tomorrow will be metal and leather(!). :)
